At the Build 2025 conference, Microsoft has launched a battery of new features for developers with a clear message: it wants to regain the affection of the technical ecosystem. From improvements in Developer Mode to integrations with AI and cross-platform tools, the company aims to position Windows as the ideal environment for SysAdmins, DevOps, and software creators.

The Developer Mode update allows developers to access network settings, remote debugging, and SSH directly from the operating system. This simplifies workflows that previously required manual configurations or third-party tools.

Microsoft has announced that Windows Terminal will become a control center for AI agents, allowing developers to orchestrate automated workflows directly from the command line. This aligns with the trend of Intelligent Terminal that we already analyzed at ForgeNEX.

With the growing adoption of containers and hybrid environments, Microsoft has improved WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) and integration with Docker. Additionally, it has launched new APIs for SysAdmins to manage patches and updates programmatically, reducing downtime.

These new features allow operations teams to centralize management of development and production environments. The ability to use PowerShell or Bash scripts to configure Windows machines reduces friction in heterogeneous environments. Furthermore, integration with tools like GitHub Copilot (now with usage-based billing) facilitates automation of repetitive tasks.
For the business, this means a reduction in developer onboarding costs and increased productivity. Microsoft is betting on an ecosystem where Windows is not an obstacle, but an enabler for innovation with AI and hybrid cloud.
